The 5 Types of Termites You Need to Know About
Termites are some of the most dangerous creatures for wooden structures. These colonies can chew through walls and flooring without being detected until extensive damage is done. As such, you should take care of your property to make it impossible for the termites to infest. Even so, you could still have termite problems which are why you need a good company to help with termite control and termite termination. Different types of termites thrive under different conditions. Some of the common types include:
Subterranean Termites
These are termites that thrive in moist areas and aren't usually found underground. They stay above ground but they build their protective tubes to prevent them from being exposed. Their habitat is usually different and easy to spot. They don't just build shelter; they also use those tubes to look for food. Their colonies can have up to 2 million termites.
Damp wood termites
These termites are mostly found in wooded areas that are a dump. They live in places with high moisture content and are usually large than other termites. Because of this, they are mostly available in coastal regions. They don't always damage buildings and other structures but if they do, getting rid of them is very difficult. Make sure your wood and other materials in your structure aren't moist.
Dry Wood Termites
These are the opposite of damp wood termites. They like dry areas but they don't necessarily live in the ground. They like wood and can infest your wooden walls, roof or any other part of the structure made of wood. Thriving under dry areas also doesn't mean that they can't be found in dump woods. They can still live in wood that is slightly moist such as those near a water heater.
Formosan Termites
These termites tend to be smaller in size but they are the most aggressive with the ability to cause the most amount of damage. They also live in huge colonies but underground. Their ability to build nests inside wood makes them dangerous and their vicious nature makes them very difficult to control. Once they ins fest a structure, you'll not get rid of them easily.
Conehead Termites
Also known as "tree termites", these are mostly found above ground. They don't build nests and they don't try to hide underground either. They walk around like ants and are very vicious. As such, they are usually capable of causing a lot of damage within a short period. They also don't seem to follow specific weather conditions which further makes them dangerous. Be very wary of the termite's existence around your home, and make according pest control routines before they make irreversible damage to your home.
